Salamanca is one of the most famous cities in Spain for its university and cultural heritage. Its university is the oldest one in Spain, and one of the oldest in Europe together with those in Paris, Oxford and Bologne Universities. It was founded by Alfonso IX in the 13th century.

Nowadays the city has a population of 180,000 inhabitants of which 40,000 are students. Besides that, a wide range of historical figures have developed their careers at this prestigous center university such as Antonio de Nebrija, Hernán Cortés, San Juan de la Cruz, Fray Luis de León and Miguel de Unamuno.

Salamanca is large enough to be able to offer the advantages of a big city, but at the same time it keeps the intimacy of a village. In Salamanca's city centre, tradition and innovation, culture and work, blend together seamlessly, allowing people to enjoy the city fully.

You will discover the combination of different architectural styles: The Gothic Cathedral with renaissance elements, the University which is one of the most outstanding buildings in the Spanish plateresque style, The Plaza Mayor one of the most beautiful Baroque squares in Spain; The house of Shells which represents different architectural styles such as the late Gothic style, with Renaissance and Mudejar elements and the old Roman Bridge over the river.

On the other hand, If you like living the nightlife, Salamanca is the perfect place to be because it is full of different types of establishments, which make it possible for everybody to have fun.

The night atmosphere is very cheerful and active everyday of the week due to the many students living in Salamanca.

Furthermore, the city offers a huge variety of shops, cinemas, theaters, banks, bars and restaurants and on Saturdays, there is an open-air bazaar – El mercado de Salamanca - with much merchandise, good bargains of souvenirs as well as local produce.

In addition, its good geographic situation allows visiting some other historic cities, such as Valladolid, Avila and Madrid, the capital of Spain, which is about two hours way.

The city of Salamanca is also well known for its rich gastronomy and, in particular, is famous for its meat, sausages, cheese, wine and ham “Jamon Serrano”.

You should not leave the city without tryng its Jamón and its delicious tapas!.

For all these reasons, Salamanca was officially designated as a European City of Culture 2002 by the UNESCO after having taken into consideration its qualities as a university town, open and hospitable as well as its historic and artistic richness.
